When searching through the CPALMS website, I focused on the Computer Science standards that start in the 2025 school year specifically for 6th grade students. I chose to focus on these standards because I feel as though they would be most relevant to my 6th grade English classroom. The specific standard that I chose was emerging technologies. This included three different standards: Identify emerging technologies, Identify Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its applications, and Identify characteristics of robotics. These standard are extremely important today with the continuous rise of technology in the classroom. Standard 2 SC.6.ET.2: Identify Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its applications describes how teachers can detect various sources of AI and its applications. I feel prepared to implement this standard in my own classroom because I have been using AI throughout college and have learned how to detect it on various websites and submitted work. This standard also discusses the benefits of AI in the classroom. This will greatly prepare me for my own classroom as I will be able to improve my lesson plans, teaching methods, grading methods, and so much more with help from AI.
On the CPALMS website I selected grade level 6 and English Language Arts standard 101: Student Resources. I selected this standard in hopes of gaining insight of how I can assist my students in the future as best as I possibly can. This standard includes many different aspects of language arts and allows teachers to have access to various lesson plans, interactive work, individual work, and so much more. For example, Inside My Mind: Narrator Perspective is an interactive activity in standard 101 that helps students understand how an author develops their point of view and how to identify different types of narration. This would be a great activity to do in my own classroom in the future to help my students better their understanding of narration.
Internet searching is practically an essential skill for students today. Internet searching is absolutely an essential skill for teachers today as well. The internet is full of classroom resources for both teaching and learning that can make a huge positive impact on students' learning experience. As a teacher, internet searching allows you to find activities, worksheets, textbooks, readings, learning websites, and so much more that allow you to easily prepare for class. Of the Internet searching skills that were introduced this week, the skill that i think I will use most moving forward is using advanced search. I've used Google advanced search throughout my college career and it has helped me immensely with my classes whether it's with homework or studying for exams. Reserve image searching is also a skill that was introduced this week that I think has been helpful for me in my everyday life. I haven't used this skill many times, but I'm excited to learn more about it and see how it can assist me in my future teaching career.
Artificial Intelligence has become a very hot topic recently in the classroom. More and more, students are using AI to do work for them and create many issues with copyright. However, AI can also be beneficial for students and teachers. I think that students in K-12 should not use AI in the classroom. I think that it's important for students to learn about AI and its benefits, but also learn about it's potential harm. Luckily, educational websites like Canvas now use AI detectors that make it easy for teachers to see when students are taking advantage of these benefits. Students learning about AI can be useful for them to utilize in their personal life, but I at a young age I don't think it's appropriate to use in the classroom. I think that teachers should encourage their students to always use authentic work and use AI for personal use.
I really enjoyed reading you perspective on AI and how it'll be a useful tool in the classroom as well as being able to detect when a student is using it. We have all used AI throughout college, it can be a very helpful tool in the classroom as well as a way to get by without thinking of our own work and though processes. I agree that students in K-12 should not use AI because as you said at a young age it can ruin a students mindset about school and they wont have a thought of their own.
